SALT LAKE CITY — A quieter protest took place in downtown Salt Lake City on Monday evening, days after the city erupted in chaos.

The gathering began at 6 p.m. at Washington Square Park, 451 S. State, in response to the death of George Floyd, who died in Minnesota in police custody after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than 8 minutes.

The organizers of the protest, the Salt Lake chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, have said they are committed to a peaceful protest, and have urged people to follow social distancing protocols.

"We aim for this event to be short, safe, and political," the event description reads.

Protest organizers said the event was so they could stand “in solidarity with” the people of Minneapolis and across the nation protesting Floyd's killing and other injustices against racial minorities.

The protest was scheduled to end at 7:30 p.m., a half-hour before the citywide curfew went into effect, but hundreds continued to march afterward and officers began to take some into custody after giving warnings.
