MAGNA — Police have identified a man who was arrested after authorities say he shot rounds out of a car when a Salt Lake police officer tried to pull him over last evening.

About 7:45 a.m., SWAT team members used a device that caused a distraction, allowing them to take him into custody near 2820 South and 7200 West, according to detective Michael Ruff.

He was later identified Tuesday afternoon as Alexis Munoz, 22. He was booked into jail for investigation of aggravated assault, fleeing in a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, according to Salt Lake police.

There were no injuries to anyone involved, and the situation was resolved, Ruff said. The man was near a house when he was taken into custody, Ruff said, but he did not know if the man was inside or outside the home.

The situation started about 11 p.m. Monday when a Salt Lake City police officer pulled the man over on I-215 near 900 South, according to Ruff. The officer saw a gun in the car as he was walking up to the vehicle, and the man decided to flee the scene, Ruff said.

As Munoz was driving away, he fired the gun out of the car, according to Ruff. Police don't know what Munoz was shooting at, but there have been no injuries or property damage reported, and the officer did not return fire, Ruff added.

Throughout the night police developed information that led them to Magna. SWAT team members were negotiating with Munoz Tuesday morning, but had an opportunity to use the device, and then took him into custody, Ruff said.

There is no threat to the public, Ruff added. It was not clear if Munoz was armed when he was taken into custody.

Ruff did not know the reason for the initial traffic stop, or if Munoz was alone in the car. The vehicle from the incident has been recovered, Ruff added.

The area isn't normally Salt Lake Police Department's jurisdiction, but police responded there because the incident began in Salt Lake, Ruff said. Multiple other police agencies were also in the area Tuesday morning.
