BYU AD Tom Holmoe on fall season: 'I don’t know when, but we’re going to play'

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe wanted to make it perfectly clear: the Cougars have every intention of playing this fall. The tenured leader of the Cougars released a video Saturday on BYU’s social media feeds expressing optimism for the return of the college football season, quelling fears from fans while he walks into the camera and pulls off a BYU logo-stamped face mask. “At BYU, we’re doing everything we can to be ready to go,” Holmoe said. “All of our Cougar teams: our coaches, our student-athletes, our fans. As Utah colleges grapple with reopening, priority turns to containing potential outbreaks in the fall

As Utah’s colleges and universities digest how to restart operations and bring students back to campus following the COVID-19 pandemic in the fall, many presidents and chancellors are rightfully determining how to keep students safe from the virus. That’s probably the wrong approach, though. "Our plan is not to prohibit the virus," Dixie State president Richard Williams said Friday during a conference call with the Utah State Higher Education Board of Regents. Jazz to re-open team store Monday at Vivint Arena

Need a new jersey or Jazz fan regalia? The Utah Jazz are re-opening the official team store located at Vivint Smart Home Arena on Monday, with new health and safety measures to help combat the spread of COVID-19. The store, which will open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., will offer a 20% discount on all jerseys as part of the announcement.

Both guests and employees will be required to wear face coverings, but the arena will provide one to patrons who do not have a mask, according to the team store’s website. Guests should also maintain proper social distancing — stand at least six feet apart — including in lines and in-store check out. All checkout areas will be cleaned and sanitized after each transaction, and high-touch areas will be disinfected every 15 minutes. Clear plastic partitions have been installed between the cashier and customer, and hand sanitizer will also be provided at checkout counters, as well as each entrance and exit. — Sean Walker, KSL.com

155 new coronavirus cases reported, 1 new death

The Utah Department of Health released its daily coronavirus numbers update Saturday afternoon, revealing an additional 155 cases of COVID-19 and one new death from the disease reported overnight. That's up from 6,913 cases the day before and brings Utah to a total of 78 coronavirus-related deaths. Most of Utah moved from "moderate risk" to "low risk" on Saturday, based on guidelines developed by state leaders as they seek to restart economic activity amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Navajo Nation residents under strictest lockdown yet

Residents of the Navajo Nation will be under the strictest weekend lockdown yet, with grocery stores and gas stations closed, and even essential workers ordered to stay home. Navajo President Jonathan Nez made the announcement after a spike in deaths that he attributed to shifting traffic patterns after the city of Gallup recently shut down to outside visitors. That lockdown in northwestern New Mexico has since ended. On the Navajo Nation, residents will face citations, with potential fines and jail time, if they leave their homes during the lockdown, which starts Friday night and ends Monday around dawn. Nez urged people to listen and not pack their bags to head out of town during the lockdown. — Felicia Fonseca, Associated Press

COVID-19 impacts loom large at Utah colleges, universities

As fall approaches, college freshmen, their parents and returning students are looking to Utah’s colleges and universities for guidance whether on-campus classes will resume this fall or if distance learning will continue. On some campuses, the uncertainty is impacting anticipated fall enrollment, although summer enrollment is up at most Utah System of Higher Education institutions. Weber State University, for one, has reported record summer enrollment. — Marjorie Cortez, KSL

Pandemic claims another retailer: J.C. Penney

The coronavirus pandemic has pushed the storied but troubled department store chain J.C. Penney into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It is the fourth major retailer to meet that fate. As part of its reorganization, the 118-year-old company said late Friday it will be shuttering some stores. It said the stores will close in phases throughout the Chapter 11 process and details of the first phase will be disclosed in the coming weeks. Penney is the biggest retailer to file for bankruptcy reorganization since the pandemic and joins luxury department store chain Neiman Marcus, J.Crew and Stage Stores. Plenty of other retailers are expected to follow as business shutdowns across the country have evaporated sales. In fact, U.S. retail sales tumbled by a record 16.4% from March to April. — Anne D'Innocenzio, Associated Press

ICYMI: Catch up on coronavirus developments from yesterday

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 164 on Friday, with two new reported deaths.

Once the majority of Utah moves to the low-risk phase of the Utah Leads Together 2.0 plan starting Saturday, most businesses will be able to resume operations in some capacity, if they haven't already. Workers previously furloughed may find new opportunities to rejoin the workforce. But some may be hesitant to do so.

While most Utah parents are still focused on distance learning right now, educators are already looking to fall.

Due to the nature of the tech industry, some Utah companies have been able to keep business going at relatively normal levels despite hundreds, if not thousands, of employees now working remotely.
