SALT LAKE CITY — On Monday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced 17 more temples will soon be reopened, including temples in Asia, Europe, and one more in Utah.
Beginning next week, the Jordan River Temple, Taipei Taiwan Temple, and Seoul Korea Temple, among others, will reopen for sealings — sometimes known as temple marriages. That will bring the total number of temples in the process of reopening to 34.
Temples will open as part of a four-phase strategy. The first phase is temple marriages conducted by minimal staff. Wedding participants are restricted to the bride, groom and a limited number of guests. All must be free of COVID-19 symptoms.
The second phase will include all living ordinances by appointment. The third phase will introduce proxy ordinances by appointment only. Temples will resume normal operations in the final phase.
Reopening the Taipei Taiwan Temple is significant. In early February, it was the first temple to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. By March 25, all temples were closed.
