WEST VALLEY CITY — One man died Saturday night when he crashed into a pole on Redwood Road in West Valley City.

Jesus Torres, 19, was traveling south on Redwood at a high speed when he clipped another car's front bumper while changing lanes about 10:30 p.m., according to West Valley Police Sgt. John Pittman.

It was initially stated that the vehicle spun out and hit a tree. It was later corrected that it hit a telephone pole and an apartment complex before ejecting the driver. Torres died at the scene, Pittman said.

West Valley City Police Lt. Justin Wyckoff said the vehicle hit a gas line at the apartment that had to be cut off. Two residents at the complex were given assistance, lodging and comfort kits by the American Red Cross of Utah. Wyckoff said the apartment needed to be closed while the building is being inspected.

The crash was the second fatal wreck involving a lane change and ejection on Saturday. Hours earlier, a 25-year-old man died when his sports car clipped a semitruck on state Route 201 in South Salt Lake.

Pittman originally said Torres was 20 years old; police later corrected his age to 19.
