Pine Creek Rehab and Nursing announces virus spread

The nursing home announced in a Facebook post that COVID-19 has spread throughout the facility. All residents were tested for the virus, and those who tested negative were transferred to another facility. The home will become a temporary designated facility for COVID-19 positive patients who do not need hospitalization. The post did not specify how many residents tested positive for the virus. — Jen Riess, KSL.com

President Trump approves Utah disaster declaration

President Donald Trump declared that a major disaster exists in Utah and ordered federal assistance to recovery efforts. According to a statement from the Office of the Press Secretary, the declaration acknowledges areas affected by COVID-19 beginning on January 20 and continuing. The declaration makes federal funding available for "emergency protective measures." — Jen Riess, KSL.com

Health department reports transmission inside SLC nursing facility

The Utah Department of Health and Salt Lake County Health Department reported Saturday that six symptomatic patients have tested positive for COVID-19 at a Salt Lake City nursing facility. One of those patients, a woman over age 85, died on April 2, the department said. "Currently, all of the remaining residents are isolated in their rooms and nursing staff is following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended safety precautions while caring for them," the department wrote in a news release. "Test results are pending on the remaining residents and those who test negative for COVID-19 will be transferred to another facility." The 34-bed facility will now serve as a space for COVID-19 patients who no longer require hospitalization. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

8th Utahn dies of COVID-19; state now at 1,428 positive cases

The Utah Department of Health's daily update revealed 1,428 Utahns have now tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, and an eighth Utahn has died of the disease. The numbers come as Utah makes an aggressive push to up its daily testing totals and better grasp the extent of the virus' spread. Utah has now tested at least 28,043 individuals for COVID-19, and 117 Utahns have been hospitalized with the disease. Read the full story here — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

UTA service reductions go into effect tomorrow

The Utah Transit Authority announced last week that bus, TRAX and FrontRunner service will be less frequent beginning tomorrow, April 5. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Most bus routes where buses ran every 15 minutes will now run every 30 minutes, and UVX routes will move from 6 minutes to 15 minutes. Other routes that don’t typically run buses every 15 minutes may be suspended or have routes altered.

TRAX light rail trains will run every 30 minutes instead of every 15 minutes on weekdays. They will also run every 30 minutes on weekends instead of every 20 minutes.

FrontRunner trains will run every hour instead of every 30 minutes on weekdays. Saturday service remains the same. UTA doesn’t run FrontRunner trains on Sundays.

ICYMI: Catch up on coronavirus developments from yesterday

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased to 1,246, with 106 hospitalizations and seven total deaths from the disease, the Utah Department of Health confirmed Friday.

Zion National Park will be closed, effective immediately Friday, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert announced in a press conference.

The Larry H. Miller Group of Companies has reduced “a small percentage” of its workforce, according to a statement from the company, due to the continuing coronavirus pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now encourages people, especially in areas hit hard by the spread of the coronavirus, to use rudimentary coverings like T-shirts, bandannas and non-medical masks to cover their faces while outdoors. President Trump announced the new federal guidelines Friday, but said he won't wear a mask.

Starting on Saturday, Walmarts across the nation will limit the number of customers allowed in stores at a given time, officials announced in a statement Friday.
