Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox provides words of encouragement for Utahns

Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox talked about school closures, testing for COVID-19 and social distancing in an almost 30-minute live video broadcast on Twitter Saturday night under the #OneUtah hashtag. He encouraged Utahns to take measures to flatten the curve of the virus'spead, including practicing social distancing. “I think the question for all of us is: How are we going to react in this moment?” he asked. Things are going to get worse, with rates of infection increasing, and there are some in the state who might not survive the disease, he said. He urged Utahns to take care of those who may be elderly, lonely and otherwise in need, and “turn outward instead of inward.” In the video he mentioned new cases of COVID-19 that would be announced. Shortly afterward, Salt Lake County announced nine new cases, bringing the county total to 14 and the state total to 19.

Utah Attorney General warns of price gouging

The Attorney General's office said Utahns are reporting price gouging — increasing prices much higher than reasonable — on limited supplies such as toilet paper, water, hand sanitizer and other essentials.

University of Utah confirms COVID-19 case within campus community

The University of Utah tweeted that a member of the campus community has tested positive for COVID-19. University communications confirmed the patient is a counseling center employee and is self-isolating off campus. The individual did not have any contact with students visiting the counseling center due to spring break. "The Counseling Center is open for crisis counseling," read the University of Utah's website. "Students who have scheduled or need counseling services also may receive them, beginning later this week, via telemental health and by telephone."

A member of the campus community has tested positive for COVID-19.

The university is working closely with public health officials to support a full and speedy recovery for this individual.

9 new confirmed cases in Salt Lake County

The Salt Lake County Health Department confirmed 9 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday, bringing the county total up to 14. 11 of those patients are adults and three are children. The children attended Hunter High School in West Valley City and Entheos Academy, a charter school with campuses in Magna and Kearns, while symptomatic. Both schools have been notified of potential exposure and students have been asked to self-quarantine at home until March 27th.

2nd confirmed COVID-19 case in Davis County

The Davis County Department of Health confirmed the county's second case of COVID-19 Saturday night. They said this individual is between 18 and 60 years old and had recently traveled internationally. Upon returning home the individual was informed of potential exposure during their travel and quickly self-quarantined. The department of health said that because of this individual's, and their family's, actions there is no public threat. "No close contacts have been identified, no public venues were affected and there is no risk to other Davis County residents in relation to this case," read the health department's statement.

School is out, but lunch is still on

Canyons School District Canyons School District announced it will provide free, grab-and-go lunches Monday through Friday during the two-week statewide dismissal. Students can pick up the lunches between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Pick-up sites are listed on Canyon District's website. Duchesne County School District Duchesne County School District has released its meal service plan for students during the closure. Beginning on Monday bus riding kids will be able to pick up meals at their bus stop during their regular pick up time. Students who do not ride the bus will go to their neighborhood school for drive-up meal services. Provo City School District Provo City School District will provide both breakfast and lunch every weakday starting Monday. Breakfast will be served from 8-9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Locations are listed on the district's website.Tooele County School District Tooele County School District announced its school dismissal feeding plan. Grab-and-go lunches will be available for drive-thru or walk-up March 17-27 from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. The district said some sites are offering free lunches while others will require a lunch number. Locations can be found on the district's website.Wasatch County School District Wasatch County School district released a school closure menu that will be offered to students. Student numbers will be gathered for informational purposes and no child will be charged. The school district said additional information will be released on Monday.

Dixie Regional Medical Center prepares triage

Washington County Emergency Services, with the assistance of multiple agencies, helped Intermountain Healthcare Management set up additional triage capability at Dixie Regional Medical Center Saturday. "This is just one of many efforts underway by various emergency services in our area to harden our community against the Corona Virus," a post on the agency's Facebook page reads.

Gallivan concerts to be streamed live

Excellence in the Community and the Gallivan Center will continue their concert series as scheduled Wednesday night but in a unique way. Because of the state's recommendations to limit gatherings, the concerts will be live streamed from the Excellence in the Community Concert Series Facebook page until further notice.

Provo Mayor announces community safety plan

Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi said effective Monday, city facilities will be closed for a two-week period. These facilities include the Provo Rec Center, Library, Golf Course, Ice Arena and the Covey Center. The city also laid out a 4-step community safety plan Saturday. "COVID-19 has created an uncertain time in our community, but what remains certain is that we will get through this together," said Kaufusi.

State issues clarification on K-12 dismissal

The state corrected Gov. Gary Herbert's comment that during public school’s two-week dismissal parents would have the option to bring their children to school to be supervised by teachers. "It is important to note that schools will not provide childcare of any kind," the statement issued Saturday says. Schools will remain open so students can retrieve personal items or pick up assignments. Some teachers may be available for brief one-on-one tutoring or to answer homework questions.

Utah Grizzlies cancel remainder of season

The Utah Grizzlies tweeted that the remainder of the ECHL season has ben canceled. "We look forward and invite you to join us in celebrating 25 years of Utah Grizzlies Hockey this fall, as part of the 2020-2021 season," read the statement.

South Davis Recreation District announces closure

Tif Miller, executive director of the South Davis Recreation District, announced the recreation center will be closed starting Sunday. The district's board will meet Monday to determine the duration of the closure. All programs and classes have been canceled through the end of the month.

LDS church closes additional businesses ‘until further notice’

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints decided it will close the Joseph Smith Memorial building and the Lion House. Restaurants owned by the church are also closed.

Cache County preschool and life skills classes alter plans

Cache County School District announced a change in plans for life skills and preschool students. Students are asked not to come to school on Monday, March 16th and Tuesday, March 17th to "give their teachers time to prepare and adjust." School will resume as normal on Wednesday.

Capitol closed to visitors

The Utah state Capitol building will be temporarily closed to the public as of today. It will remain open for official state business Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Centerville announces limited city services, effective Monday

Centerville City will be limiting city services to prevent the spread of COVID-19 effective Monday, March 16, according to a statement from City Manager Brant Hanson and POlice Chief/Emergency Manager Paul Child. The changes include:

The Police Department window will be open from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. for administrative services. For non-emergency police call (801) 292-8441 or 911 for emergency calls.

Police Department will not perform fingerprint services, will not allow ride-alongs and will not allow visitors.

Police will only respond to medical calls requested by EMS

The Citizen's POlice Academy has been suspended until further notice

City Hall will remain open, residents will need to go to the court window for assistance and are asked to only come in for essential services.

The courtroom will be closed, some cases may be rescheduled. Judge Miller will still hear some cases on a limited basis. Call (801) 295-8344 with questions.

The Whitaker Museum will be closed.

The Public Works building will be closed to the public

All city-sponsored events will be postponed or canceled, Fourth of July events are still expected to take place.

Rudy Gobert to donate $500K to help Vivint Arena employees, health care system

The Utah Jazz announced Saturday that Rudy Gobert — the first NBA player to test positive for COVID-19 — will donate $500,000 to help part-time Vivint Arena employees and to support the health care system in Utah, Oklahoma and his native France. “I know there are countless ways that people have been impacted. These donations are a small token that reflect my appreciation and support for all those impacted and are the first of many steps I will take to try and make a positive difference," Gobert wrote. He had previously apologized for cavalier behavior before learning he has the coronavirus.

Pac-12 cancels sports for remainder of academic year

Following decisions to cancel the NCAA basketball tournament and all winter and spring sport championships, the Pac-12 announced today that it will cancel all athletic competition for the remainder of the academic year. In addition, organized team activities are prohibited until at least March 29. The University of Utah is a member of the Pac-12 conference.

Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell, one of two Jazzmen to test positive for COVID-19, updated his condition Saturday in a short online video. Mitchell said he's feeling fine and playing lots of video games while in isolation.

Salt Lake Film Society closes its 2 theaters

The Salt Lake Film Society, which operates the Broadway and Tower movie theaters in Salt Lake City, announced that both venues will be closed until April 17.

Cruise lines suspend all cruises for 30 days

President Trump announced Friday that Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC Cruises have agreed to suspend outbound cruises for 30 days.

University of Utah Health announces new visitor policies

University of Utah Health announced new visitor policies Saturday that will go into affect at its hospitals on Monday, March 16.

Visitors who are sick are asked not to visit.

Visitors under the age of 18 are asked not to visit.

No visitors or companions will be allowed for patients with confirmed or possible COVID-19.

Patients are allowed only one visitor or companion at a time.

Visitors or companions must use alcohol sanitizer or wash their hands before entering and after leaving any U of U Health facility, patient room or exam room.

In-car screening now available in Sugar House

For those who have been screened and referred by a physician, in-car testing is now available for COVID-19. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson recorded a short video showing how to use the new service.

A new case of COVID-19 was announced Friday in Salt Lake County by Utah Department of Health state epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn. The new Salt Lake County case announced Friday is travel-related and not a case of community spread, Dunn said.

President Donald Trump declared a national emergency Friday as the new coronavirus continues to spread. The emergency would open up nearly $50 billion for state and local governments to respond to the outbreak.
