SALT LAKE CITY — With several notable bills passed and plenty more still under consideration, the Utah Legislature now enters the final week of its 2020 general session with important decisions to make.

The session will wrap up on Thursday, by which time lawmakers will also have to approve a final budget for fiscal year 2021.

According to the Legislature's website, here is a list of significant deadlines in the final week of the session:

  • Monday: General appropriations bills, supplemental appropriations bills, and school finance bills shall be available to legislators by floor time
  • Any bond bill shall be made available to legislators by noon
  • Last day for a motion to reconsider
  • Last day to consider bills from own house
  • Tuesday: Last day for legislators to prioritize fiscal note bills and identify other programs for new funding
  • Last day final action must be taken on each bond bill
  • Last day final action must be taken on each general appropriations bill, supplemental appropriation bill, and school finance bill
  • Wednesday: Last day to pass any bill with a fiscal note of $10,000 or more
  • Thursday: The final appropriations bill shall be made available to legislators by calendared floor time, and final action must be taken
  • Last day of session

Rep. Christine Watkins, R-Price, predicts a slightly slower final week than her first three sessions, but said the week can get "pretty crazy."

"People are trying to get all their bills passed, over to the House, over to the Senate," Watkins said. "People fall asleep at their desks during lunch."

The Legislature has passed 210 bills so far this session; in 2019, it passed 574.
