SPRINGVILLE — Crews continue to battle two wildfires Wednesday, though both are under more control than they were Tuesday, fire officials said.

Crews fight South Rim Fire growing 100 acre fire near Stockton

Crews are working to put out a fire on a hillside behind a community called South Rim, near Stockton, according to Bucky Whitehouse, emergency services director for Tooele County. Officials asked people to avoid the area while crews fought the fire. At one point, the now 100-acre fire, was close to homes and crews were prepping for evacuations. However, they have since decided it wasn’t necessary, Whitehouse said. Tooele Army Depot, Stockton Fire Department, Tooele Fire Department and state fire all responded to the flames. It was first reported as 3-5 acres but grew to the larger size, fire officials said. Birds in the power lines caused the fire, officials told KSL TV Reporter Ashley Moser. No injuries have been reported, according to Dave Vickers, Wasatch Front area fire manger. The biggest threat the fire posed was how close it was burning to cellphone towers, he said. Fire crews will be on scene overnight mopping up hotspots, fire officials said. Officials were expected to provide an update at 8 a.m.

Round Peak Fire dislodges giant boulder that lands on Springville porch; flames 40% contained

The most recent estimate of the Round Peak Fire was 245 acres as of Wednesday afternoon, according to fire officials. The fire was at 5% contained for a few days but has since been increased to 40% contained as of Wednesday at 4 p.m., according to officials. An infrared flight flew over the fire early Wednesday about 1:30 a.m. and previously reassessed the acreage count at 167.

Forest Service officials also confirmed in a news release that the Round Peak Fire was caused by a campfire and is still under investigation. — Liesl Nielsen, KSL.com

Crews more than double containment of Radio Hill Fire

The Radio Hill Fire is now 62% contained, up from 30% containment on Tuesday, Box Elder County Emergency Management confirmed. The flames have burned over 2,300 acres. — Liesl Nielsen, KSL.com
