SALT LAKE CITY — A new high-rise hotel at the Salt Palace Convention Center will bring a sleek, modern look to the west side of Salt Lake City.
Construction on the 28-story Convention Center Hotel will break ground later this year and is scheduled to open in 2022, according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Downtown Alliance.
“This project strengthens the Salt Lake product offering for meetings, conventions, tourism,” Downtown Alliance executive director Dee Brewer said in the release. “The hotel investment will continue to ripple through the city encouraging additional investment in hospitality and other businesses that are an amenity to all and that will enhance the local property and sales tax base.”
Artist renderings of the planned hotel released last week provided a first look for what the building will look like.
The hotel will be located at the southeast corner of the convention center complex, near the intersection of West Temple and 200 South, according to the release.
Over 700 rooms are planned for the hotel, along with 62,000 square feet of meeting space, the release said. It will also include typical hotel amenities, such as a restaurant, bar and lounge, fitness center, pool and event terrace.
The $337 million hotel will be funded in part with a New Convention Facility Development Incentive, provided through the Governor’s Office of Economic Development Board. The incentive will add $281 million to the project over 20 years and was approved last fall.

A hotel at the convention center has been something the area has needed for a long time, said Salt Lake County Deputy Mayor Erin Litvack.
“We believe and know from our convention and meeting planners that we’ve been marketing to for years that this has been one of the missing pieces of the puzzle for them to choose our destination for their convention,” Litvack said.
Atlanta firm Portman Holdings is designing and developing the hotel along with St. George development firm DDRM, according to the release.
The hotel’s operator is expected to be announced later this year.
“This is something that our community’s been working to have in our destination for a long time and we’re really, really excited about it coming online, and we feel really positive about our partnership with Portman and DDRM,” Litvack said.
