SOUTH SALT LAKE — Residents were evacuated Wednesday night as police tried to apprehend a man who they say has a history of guns and violent crimes.
South Salt Lake executive police officer Gary Keller said officers were trying to arrest the man about 7 p.m. when he fled on foot to the area of 61 E. Cordelia Ave.
Keller said officers called a SWAT team to the scene as a precaution about 8 p.m. due to the man's history. His name was not immediately released.
As of late Wednesday night, Keller said officers have containment but do not know if the man is barricaded in a yard or inside a residence.
Police evacuated residents in the area to keep them out of harm's way, according to Keller, but he said time was on officers' side as of about 10:15 p.m.
Murray police and K-9s from Davis County were assisting South Salt Lake police and a combined SWAT team, Keller said.
