OIF Work Continues to Advance SDN Commercialization Through New Project — “Requirements for Integrated Packet Optical SDN”

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 15, 2018--Reinforcing its work to speed the implementation and commercialization of software-defined networking (SDN), announced the launch of its newest project — “Requirements for Integrated Packet Optical SDN.” The project outlines requirements for a multi-layer SDN reference architecture as a use case for packet optical transport networks.

To meet the need for service/application-aware dynamic connectivity, on-demand bandwidth (e.g. in data center applications) and reduced OPEX, packet and optical layers need to successfully integrate with SDN control. More importantly, there needs to be an interoperable framework that can be deployed across the network operator community for Data Center Interconnect (DCI) and other Wide Area Network (WAN) applications. The “Requirements for Integrated Packet Optical SDN” project will generate functional requirements, a reference architecture and use cases for packet/optical networks guided by the vision to enable agile, open network solutions that simplify operations and optimize resource utilization.

“Most of the existing SDN standards work, including OIF’s recent SDN Transport Application Programming Interface (T-API) multi-vendor interoperability demo, addresses the technical details,” said Junjie Li of China Telecom and OIF Network Operator Working Group Chair. “However, it is critical to also work across layers and build a standardized universal open framework at the solution level that will normalize architecture, interfaces and behaviors to advance the industry as a whole.”

On November 30, OIF experts will participate in the Lightwave Open Optical webcast series to discuss the results of OIF’s 2018 SDN T-API multi-vendor interoperability demonstration – ‘Assuring Open Optical Networking Interoperability.’ The collaborative demo, which took place earlier this year, showcased new dynamic behavior use cases and deployment scenarios and identified multiple success points and areas where additional work is needed to enhance performance.
