LOGAN — A man is in custody after a two-hour standoff outside of a convenience store ended peacefully Monday evening, police said.
It all began shortly before 5 p.m. when police attempted to pull over a Cache County man driving a pickup truck that appeared to have makeshift license plates, according to Logan Police Capt. Tyson Budge.
When a squad car pulled up behind the man at a 7-Eleven, 405 N. Main St., the man told police he didn't see a problem with the license plates and indicated that he had a weapon, refusing to come out of his truck, Budge said.
"He has told us that he would rather die than go to jail," Budge said, "and what we're trying to do right now is just negotiate him into coming out peacefully."
Chopper 5 footage showed six marked squad cars in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven, with officers standing outside their vehicles. More squad cars were parked in the street.
The man remained in his vehicle until shortly after 7 p.m., when Logan police tweeted the issue was "peacefully resolved" and the area was being cleared.
Details about how the standoff was brought to an end were not immediately available.
“Unfortunately, you don’t have the right to make your own plates no matter what your belief system is," Budge said. "You have to obey the law just like everybody else does. Pay your taxes and put your license plates on and get them registered.”
Had the man complied with the officer who pulled his vehicle over, Budge said he would have likely received a simple citation. But the man could now be facing criminal charges, Budge said.
Police did not release the man's name Monday night.
