ST. LOUIS — Utah golfer Kelsey Chugg is one match away from defending her U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur title.
The former Weber State golfer defeated Portland’s Gretchen Johnson 2 and 1 Thursday to advance to the final round of the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis.
Chugg, who currently lives in Salt Lake City, will tee off against Shannon Johnson of Norton, Massachusetts, at 8 a.m. MDT Friday.
"I didn’t play well in some of the bigger events, but I felt like my game was as good as some of the top players, and I was able to hang with them," Chugg told usga.org. "It's helped me a lot this year."
Back-to-back holes on the front nine, in addition to three-straight wins to start the back, helped Chugg hold off Gretchen Johnson, who won No. 12, 13 and 15 before Chugg halted Nos. 16 and 17 to hold on for the win.
Shannon Johnson was the medalist after the tournament’s stroke play, and advanced to the finals after beating Missouri’s Michelle Butler 7 and 5 on Thursday.
Chugg defeated Mary Jane Hiestand 3 and 1 a year ago in Houston to capture her first Mid-Amateur title and earn a spot in the U.S. Women's Open last spring. It was Chugg’s first-ever appearance in the national mid-amateur tournament.
