SALT LAKE CITY — And just like that, the first week of college football is over.

For the Pac-12, undefeated seasons aren’t in sight for four teams, particularly Washington who entered the season ranked No. 6 nationally. Oregon State is the other north team that lost, while south teams Arizona and UCLA failed to win in Week 1.

Here’s a look at how the Pac-12 performed in its first weekend of play.

Arizona (0-1) vs BYU (1-0)

Score: BYU 28, Arizona 23

Game recap: After a scoreless first quarter, Arizona showed some promise with a 15-yard passing touchdown and 24-yard field goal heading into halftime. However, BYU came out of its locker room and took advantage of the Wildcats’ mistakes to build an 18-point lead. Quarterback Khalil Tate rallied Arizona in the fourth quarter, putting together two touchdowns with three minutes left in the game, but the Wildcats trailed after a failed 2-point conversion.

Key stat: Tate was held to just 14 rushing yards.

Conference implication: Tate is a weapon for Arizona as a mobile quarterback. The Wildcats need to find ways to move the ball when opponents’ offensive line is pushing them around. The defense started well, but got loose in the third quarter, allowing 18 points. They’ll need to improve on consistent play so they don’t get trampled in conference play.

Next opponent: Arizona travels to Houston on Saturday.

Arizona State (1-0) vs UTSA (0-1)

Score: Arizona State 49, UTSA 7

Game recap: Arizona State controlled the game from the opening kickoff, going 81 yards in four plays. The Sun Devils then picked off UTSA 30 seconds later to go up 14-0. By halftime, their advantage was 28-0. The Roadrunners managed to avoid a shutout with a late touchdown.

Key stat: The Sun Devils sacked their opponents’ quarterbacks nine times.

Conference implication: It’s not a bad way to start the season for the Sun Devils, but a tougher opponent comes into town next week

Next opponent: Arizona State hosts Michigan State on Saturday.

California (1-0) vs UNC (0-1)

Score: California 24, UNC 17

Game recap: In unique fashion, Cal rotated between three quarterbacks — sometimes in the same series — in its season opener. The defense was solid, though, as it forced four interceptions and allowed just one field goal before two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. All of UNC’s points came in the second half of the game as Cal had a 17-0 advantage at the half.

Key stat: The Bears finished with just 119 passing yards.

Conference implication: The Bears’ offense struggled, which is expected without a consistent quarterback on the field. Meanwhile, the defense looked great, especially in the backfield. Next week’s matchup will give them more of a test to see if they’re legitimate before conference play starts.

Next opponent: Cal travels to BYU on Saturday.

Colorado (1-0) vs Colorado State (0-2)

Score: Colorado 45, Colorado State 13

Game recap: Colorado owned the game from the get go. Quarterback Steven Montez completed his first 12 passes and got his team on the board early with a 38-yard touchdown on the opening drive. The Buffs proved to be too much for the Rams as they started to separate with three-consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter.

Key stat: The Buffs’ 45 points is the most they’ve scored against the Rams since 1996.

Conference implication: While Colorado didn’t play perfectly — Montez threw an interception and the offense lost a fumble — this is a great start to the season. The Buffs have confidence on both sides of the ball and they need to continue their explosive offense as they meet tougher teams.

Next opponent: Colorado travels to Nebraska on Saturday.

Oregon (1-0) vs Bowling Green (0-1)

Score: Oregon 58, Bowling Green 24

Game recap: Bowling Green led 10-0 in the first quarter, but Oregon scored 37 unanswered points to take the lead that it’d never give up. Ducks quarterback Justin Herbert added an 83-yard touchdown before being replaced by Braxton Burmeister. When Oregon didn’t move the ball and Bowling Green scored, head coach Mario Cristobal decided to bring back Herbert, who put another touchdown on the board.

Key stat: Herbert completed just 10 passes, but five were for touchdowns.

Conference implication: It’s the 14th consecutive home game victory for the Ducks, who have posted at least 40 points in all its 13 home-opening wins except for one in 2009 when they scored 38 points. Winning at home is a gimme for the Ducks, but they’ll need to win on the road if they want to improve from last year.

Next opponent: Oregon hosts Portland State on Saturday.

Oregon State (0-1) at Ohio State (1-0)

Score: Ohio State 77, Oregon State 31

Game recap: Ohio State scored on five of its first six possessions and the rest was history. At halftime, the Buckeyes led 42-14. The Beavers didn’t give up, despite a lengthy rain delay, with an 80-yard touchdown run and 75-yard touchdown pass. Unfortunately for Oregon State, their opponent was too much.

Key stat: Oregon State’s defense allowed 721 offensive yards from Ohio State.

Conference implication: The Beavers allowed quarterback Conor Blount, who replaced starter Jake Luton after he left with a possible concussion, to be sacked five times in the first half. Mistakes like this and a struggle against big-time offenses will prove costly to Oregon State. Luckily, there’s some hope with how they were able to exploit Ohio State at times.

Next opponent: Oregon State hosts Southern Utah on Saturday.

Stanford (1-0) vs San Diego State (0-1)

Score: Stanford 31, San Diego State 10

Game recap: The Cardinal started slow, but finally got in the groove of things, scoring on a safety and a touchdown before halftime. Quarterback K.J. Costello and receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside dominated as the Aztecs’ defensive backs struggled to keep up in the second half.

Key stat: Arcega-Whiteside finished with a career-high six catches for 226 yards and three touchdowns.

Conference implication: Stanford needed to find a way to take advantage of the passing game when defenses figured out how to stop star running back Bryce Love. The Cardinal was able to do that in its first game. Continuing that will be required for a successful season.

Next opponent: Stanford hosts USC on Saturday.

UCLA (0-1) vs Cincinnati (1-0)

Score: Cincinnati 26, UCLA 17

Game recap: UCLA was up 10-0 to start the game, but Cincinnati got after it and scored 17 unanswered points to have the lead at half. The Bruins managed to even the score in the third with a 74-yard run touchdown. But with less than 10 minutes to play, the Bearcats scored on a safety and a last-minute 1-yard touchdown to clinch the win.

Key stat: The Bruins were limited to just 306 offensive yards.

Conference implication: It’s a work in progress, but Chip Kelly’s debut as UCLA’s head coach wasn’t what the team hoped. Some promise showed with the quarterbacks, so once the team gets familiar with its new offense things should get exciting.

Next opponent: UCLA travels to Oklahoma on Saturday.

USC (1-0) vs UNLV (0-1)

Score: USC 43, UNLV 21

Game recap: The game was close, with UNLV leading 19-14 at the end of the half. After a scoreless third quarter, freshman quarterback JT Daniels found a rhythm to help set up three touchdowns and a 36-yard field goal to win his first game in the Coliseum.

Key stat: USC allowed 308 rushing yards.

Conference implication: The Trojans need to adjust on defense after allowing a big ground game for the Rebels. With Stanford next on the schedule, they can’t afford to let Love explode down the field.

Next opponent: USC travels to Stanford on Saturday.

Utah (1-0) vs Weber State (0-1)

Score: Utah 41, Weber State 10

Game recap: Utah had a rough start to its season, finding itself down 10-0 to its in-state rival Weber State. Quarterback Tyler Huntley threw an early interception and Lou Groza winner Matt Gay’s first field goal attempt was blocked. Once the jitters went away, Huntley put together four touchdowns and running back Zack Moss rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown to help the Utes score 41 unanswered points.

Key stat: Utah’s defense held the Wildcats’ offense to only 61 yards, the third lowest total in Utah history.

Conference implication: The Utes’ defense looked fantastic, but the offensive game needs to improve as they committed four turnovers and receivers struggled to catch the ball. Utah has one more week to fix its mistakes before entering conference play against Washington.

Next opponent: Utah travels to Northern Illinois on Saturday.

Washington (0-1) at Auburn (1-0)

Score: Auburn 21, Washington 16

Game recap: The biggest score differential in the game was 9 points in Auburn’s favor, but quarterback Jake Browning rallied the Huskies. They scored 10 points to take a 1-point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Auburn ran 10 yards for a touchdown with six minutes left which eventually sealed the win.

Key stat: Browning completed 18-of-32 passes for 296 yards with a touchdown and one interception.

Conference implication: For the Pac-12’s sake, Washington will need to overcome this loss. It’s only one game, so no team will be perfect, but conference play begins in two weeks.

Next opponent: Washington hosts North Dakota on Saturday.

Washington State (1-0) at Wyoming (1-1)

Score: Washington State 41, Wyoming 19

Game recap: Wyoming led at the half by three points and scored toward the beginning of the third quarter. However, Washington State graduate transfer quarterback Gardner Minshew helped lead the Cougars to four unanswered scoring drives to get a road win.

Key stat: Minshew completed 38-of-57 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns.

Conference implication: The Cougars entered the game having lost seven-consecutive season openers played on the road. Their last season-opening win on the road was in 2004, so this was a positive way to start their year.

Next opponent: Washington State hosts San Jose State on Saturday.
