SALT LAKE CITY — Hundreds of residents remained evacuated Wednesday as the Dollar Ridge Fire continued to burn out of control.
The Dollar Ridge Fire reached 42,000 acres and was 4 percent contained, as of Wednesday night. For perspective, last summer's Brian Head Fire burned 71,673 acres total.
An estimated 30 homes have been lost in the Dollar Ridge fire, but firefighters continued to fight the blaze Wednesday. The fire also closed a 42-mile stretch of U.S. 40.
The Maine Fire evacuations were lifted late Tuesday evening in the Dry Fork Canyon area after crews were able to stop the fire from jumping 2500 West. The area of 2500 West near 3400 North was still closed as of Wednesday morning as fire crews continued to work on extinguishing hot spots.
Gov. Herbert ordered on Tuesday no fireworks on "on federal, state or unincorporated land" due to extreme fire danger. He signed a state of emergency on Sunday "due to the threat of public safety, property, critical infrastructure, natural resources and the environment," from the effects of wildfires, drought conditions and possible future flash flooding, "effective for the month of July 2018."
