SALT LAKE CITY — A local lending company surprised more than 840 students at Jackson and Rose Park elementary schools with new school supplies and backpacks.

Volunteers from Primary Residential Mortgage Inc. gathered Friday morning to hand-deliver backpacks to elementary school students in Salt Lake City.

Many families can buy school supplies at the beginning of the year, but supplies often run out halfway through the year, said Kandice Davis, a public relations specialist with the mortgage company.

"This is a time of year that students actually really do need school supplies," Davis said. "That's when the teachers most of the time have to spend their own money and fill the school supplies for the students."

The mortgage company partnered with the Kids In Need Foundation to raise money and fill the backpacks with various school items, including notebooks, folders, pencils, crayons, rulers and sticky notes.

Primary Residential Mortgage has given away hundreds of backpacks to low-income schools across the nation over the past week, Davis added.
