KEARNS — A 20-year-old man was killed late Saturday night in a shooting near the Utah Olympic Oval, according to Unified Police detective Ken Hansen.
Police identified the man as Joshua Belen, who they say was homeless.
The shooting took place at about 11:30 p.m. in a parking lot northwest of the Olympic Oval, Hansen said. Neighbors reported they heard shots fired in the area, he said.
Police found the man dead at the scene when they arrived. Belen was shot once, Hansen said.
Hansen said the shooting did not appear to be gang-related, and Belen did not appear to have any ties to gangs. He said detectives did not yet know the motivation behind the shooting.
Police identified Belen by examining his phone, and detectives are now looking at the cell phone in hopes of finding more leads, Hansen said. Detectives are also looking at surveillance footage, he said.
Police were still searching for suspects in Saturday's shooting, but Hansen said detectives have a lead in the case.
