SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A West Jordan GOP party officer has been picked to fill a vacant seat in Utah's Legislature after Salt Lake County Republicans used a coin toss to settle a tie vote.
Cheryl Acton won the election after about 50 Salt Lake County GOP delegates on Thursday night winnowed a field of four candidates running to replace Rep. Adam Gardiner, who recently became the county recorder.
County party chair Jake Parkinson says Acton and another party officer, Lyle Decker tied in each of two rounds of voting, requiring the race to be settled by a coin toss.
Parkinson says Acton's name has been sent to the governor to ratify the party's choice.
Coin flips are occasionally used to settle elections in Utah and elsewhere.
West Jordan officials in November settled a deadlocked council race by a coin flip.
