SALT LAKE CITY — Jared Stubbs has stage 4 small cell lung cancer. He's undergoing chemotherapy. Meeting actors Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen was a welcome surprise.

The "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Captain America: Civil War" co-stars were in town promoting their Sundance Film. They visited patients in the ICU, surgical oncology unit, Bone Marrow Transplant unit and medical oncology at the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

"He's fantastic, really nice guy. Just personable," Stubbs said. "What it does is it just gives you that extra jolt, that hey, there are people out there that care."

Kitty Conover is fighting stage 3 ovarian cancer and is recovering from surgery.

"Oh my gosh, it was awesome. Put a smile on my face big time," she said. "He had soft hands," she said. Conover added that she's an even bigger fan now after meeting Renner.

Carlee Bradford has non-Hodgkin lymphoma and will need a bone marrow transplant.

"It was fun to see some faces you only see on the big screen and see them in real life," she said.

The stars wore protective gowns and gloves in the transplant unit because the patients’ immune systems there are severely compromised.

"It's a cold, January day and all the sudden you've got a celebrity in your hospital room," Bradford said.

It wasn't the typical red-carpet photo shoot for these stars, but one they wouldn't have missed for the world.

Jeremy Renner lost a family member to cancer and said that by brightening those patients' day, he gained strength as well.
