WEST VALLEY CITY — A new scholarship will be offered in honor of fallen West Valley City police officer Cody Brotherson, a Utah nonprofit organization announced Tuesday.

The Utah 1033 Foundation said its $2,500 officer in Brotherson's name will go toward college costs for the child of a Utah law enforcement officer who demonstrates excellent academic performance and leadership.

The foundation said similar scholarships exist in honor five other police fallen Utah police officers — all killed in the line of duty since 2011, when the nonprofit group was created.

Brotherson, 25, was struck and killed by a fleeing vehicle Nov. 6 while attempting to lay down a spike trip to stop the vehicle, police said. Three teenage boys, two of them 15 years old and the other 14, were arrested and booked into a juvenile detention center. The circumstances of the fatal incident were still being investigated Tuesday.

“Our community faced a tragedy last week with the loss of one of Utah’s heroes, and we honor officer Brotherson’s name and continue his legacy through a new leadership award and scholarship,” said Tore Steen, co-founder of The Utah 1033 Foundation. “The scholarship program is our way of showing unwavering support not only to the families of Utah officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, but also to the dependents of those currently serving their communities."

Interested students must send in an application by Jan. 31, 2017, to be considered. Visit www.utah1033.org for more information.

Also Tuesday, Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, honored Brotherson on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, calling him a "local hero."

"Cody was one of these brave ones who ultimately lost his life protecting us," Stewart said. "My prayers go out to the Brotherson family during this extremely difficult time. We will forever be grateful for his and their sacrifice."
