MIDVALE — A 15-year-old girl and her 16-year-old brother were killed in a shooting in Midvale late Wednesday night.

The shooting happened at the Millcreek Apartments at 759 W. Center Street just before 11 p.m.

The girl was declared dead at the scene and her brother was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Unified police believe the girl owed a man money for a shirt which led to an argument. The argument turned physical and the girl's brother grabbed a knife to defend his sister. The man then pulled out a gun and shot both siblings, police said.

Police are still looking for the suspect.

"It's a terrible, terrible tragedy that has affected this community greatly," Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder said.

Police did not release the names of the victims Wednesday night.
