SOUTH OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- The number of people being diagnosed with diabetes in Utah is on the rise.
When health officials began collecting data on diabetes in 1989, about 3 percent of Utah's adult population was diagnosed with diabetes.
Now the state rate is closer to 6 percent. The national average is 8 percent.
Diabetes can cause serious complications, such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower-extremity amputation. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the country.
Doctors say people in Utah and around the country aren't getting enough exercise, which can contribute to diabetes.
