SALT LAKE CITY — The second of four defendants has been sentenced for the 2014 death of Orlando Roybal, who police say was killed in an ambush during a drug deal.
Cameron Roger Fuger, 28, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony. A murder charge against him was dropped in a deal requiring him to "fully and truthfully cooperate" as other cases surrounding Roybal's death move forward.
Fuger was sentenced Friday to 365 days in jail — with credit given for the 240 days he has already served — followed by 150 hours of community service and 60 months of probation.
Fuger gave a brief apology Friday and thanked prosecutors for working with him.
As she handed down the sentence, 3rd District Court Judge Katie Bernards-Goodman said it appears Fuger was "the only one holding back a little" on the night of the shooting.
On Dec. 4, 2014, police say Roybal, 32, and his girlfriend were in South Salt Lake to make a drug deal, which was actually an "ambush-style" plot to rob the woman.
When they arrived at 600 E. Leland Ave., the woman they were meeting, Whitney Marie Connor, climbed into the back seat of the car. Roybal reportedly told his girlfriend, "We're about to get got" as three men wearing bandanas on their faces rushed up to the car, charging documents state.
Two men opened the driver's side door where Roybal's girlfriend was sitting, demanding her purse at gunpoint and shooting Roybal multiple times after they grabbed it.
The gunman in the fatal robbery, 25-year-old Amar Miljkovic, pleaded guilty earlier this year to murder in Roybal's death. A charge of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, was dismissed and he was later sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
The third man, Chris Villiard, 29, has also pleaded guilty to first-degree felony aggravated robbery while a murder charge was dismissed.
Villiard was also scheduled to be sentenced Friday, but officials from Adult Probation and Parole have yet to meet with Villiard to prepare a pre-sentence report, defense attorney Rudy Bautista said. Villiard was not transported from the Tooele County Jail for the hearing.
In tears, a woman identifying herself as Villiard's mother called out to the judge from the court gallery after the case was called.
"Can you please try to go see him this time?" she asked before leaving the courtroom, weeping.
Sentencing for Villiard was rescheduled to Jan. 8.
The case against Connor, 28, is ongoing. She is has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and aggravated robbery, first-degree felonies, and obstructing justice, a second-degree felony.
Connor also appeared briefly in court Friday. Her attorney, Maren Larson, has called for a mental health evaluation and Connor's next hearing was set for Jan. 22.
