SALT LAKE CITY — Elder Richard G. Scott returned home Tuesday night after the member of the LDS Church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spent five nights in the hospital due to gastrointestinal bleeding.

Elder Scott, 86, was hospitalized Thursday night. By Friday, his bleeding was under control. He was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon and is recuperating at home, according to a press release issued by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The church also provided an update on another member of the Twelve, Elder L. Tom Perry, who began radiation treatment on Friday after a diagnosis of thyroid cancer.

Elder Perry, 92, is still under medical care, the update said, but he is home conducting church business and receiving visits from other LDS Church leaders.

Elder Perry spent time in the hospital on Wednesday due to breathing problems but was released the same day. Difficulty breathing is one symptom of thyroid cancer, according to WebMD.com.
