Powerful earthquake smashes Nepal...Big protest planned in Baltimore...Rights advocate slain in Pakistan

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A powerful, 7.9-magnitude earthquake was followed by a 6.6 aftershock in Nepal's capital and the densely populated Kathmandu Valley, where injuries and heavy damage are reported. Houses and centuries-old temples were destroyed in the worst tremor in the Himalayan nation in over 80 years. The earthquake also shook several cities across northern India, and was felt as far away as Lahore in Pakistan.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore is bracing for what could be the biggest demonstration yet following the death of Freddie Gray who suffered a spine injury during an incident with police. Protesters vow to shut down the city and Malik Shabazz of Black Lawyers for Justice has demanded the arrest of six officers involved in the arrest of Gray. Police acknowledge Gray should have received medical attention and that he was not seat belted into a police van.

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — A prominent women's rights advocate has been gunned down in Pakistan. Authorities say two men on a motorcycle shot and killed Sabeen Mehmud just hours after she held a forum on the country's restive Baluchistan region, home to a long-running insurgency. Police say her mother was wounded. Friends and colleagues say it was a targeted killing.

CRISP POINT, Mich. (AP) — Two sisters from Oklahoma and Nebraska are safe and sound after becoming stuck in the snow for two weeks on an unplowed, little-used road in a remote part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Leslie Roy and Lee Marie Wright had been visiting relatives and say they survived on eight boxes of Girl Scout Cookies and a bag of cheese puffs. They were examined at a hospital and released.

RIGA, Latvia (AP) — Greece's European creditors say they hope a rebuke of the finance minister from Athens will yield positive results in getting a formal economic reform plan. He had failed to present the plan on time at a "critical" meeting of the eurozone's 19 finance ministers yesterday.
