WEST JORDAN — Two people are dead following an auto-pedestrian accident on 7800 South near the Mountain View Corridor (6300 West).

At around 5:30 p.m., Salt Lake Valley dispatchers received a call reporting the auto-pedestrian accident, West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Roberts said.

When emergency workers arrived, they found man in an electric wheelchair and a "small boy" had been hit by a car, Roberts said. They both died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle involved was transported to the hospital, police said. His condition was unknown Saturday night.

The victims, later identified as 44-year-old Todd Johnson and his 11-year-old son, of West Jordan, were apparently offered a ride immediately prior to the accident.

"The offer was declined," Roberts said, "and as this person drove away they saw them get hit by a vehicle."

A woman told KSL News she saw the pair a couple of hours earlier, heading east on 7800 South. She said the boy was hanging onto the back of the wheelchair and the two were talking and appeared to be having a good time together.

Police didn't know where the victims were coming from or where they were headed.

"We do know that they lived in a neighborhood nearby," said West Jordan Police Sgt. Joe Monson.

Investigators do not yet know what caused the accident, though Roberts said area is very dark.

"At this part of 7800 South there aren't very many street lights or ambient light even in the area," he said.

The names of the father and son were not released, pending notification of family.

A portion of 7800 South was closed for a couple of hours as police investigated the accident. The road has since been reopened.
