BANGKOK (AP) — A diplomat from the Greek Embassy in Thailand died Wednesday after she fell under a moving train, officials said.
Thailand's state railway said the accident occurred on a train in Kanchanaburi, an area famous for its natural beauty and a bridge built by Western prisoners during World War II memorialized in the book and movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai."
It said the diplomat got off the train during a stop to take a photo, then tried to get back on after it had started moving, but failed and fell underneath. It said she was taken to a hospital but was too severely injured to survive.
An official at the Greek Embassy confirmed the death, but withheld the victim's name pending notification of her family.
