TOOELE — The local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has launched its own investigation into the stabbing death of a Tooele County teen.

The group wants to know if race played a role in the killing and make sure the people responsible for the crime are properly charged.

Two small groups gathered at Stansbury Elementary, 485 Country Club in Stansbury Park, just before midnight Friday to watch two people fight. Law enforcement investigators said 17-year-old Jesse Horowitz went to watch the scuffle but soon got involved in a fight of his own.

According to the Tooele County Sheriff, one man pulled out a knife and stabbed Horowitz multiple times, killing him.

The NAACP said he was the only African-American teen in the middle of the fight and was the only one killed in the brawl. That raised suspicion for Jeanetta Williams, local branch president for the NAACP.

“The nature of it would be to investigate the whole nature of the stabbing and to make sure it is not anything racially involved," she said.

Williams said she plans to work with investigators at the sheriff's department to make sure the people responsible for Horowitz's death face the proper punishment.

The group hopes to talk with responding officers, the teens who were at the fight, along with the two men the sheriff's department has arrested in this case.
