KANNARRAVILLE, Iron County — A 41-year-old jail inmate was flown to a northern Utah hospital Saturday after it was discovered he needed emergency medical care.

Grant Louise Biederman had been treated at the Valley View Medical Center on Friday for a supposedly minor head injury received in a gunfire exchange with police, according to Iron County Sheriff's Sgt. Charles Triplett.

Police were called about 1:45 p.m. Friday to the Red Lodge Campground, 15 N. Main, where Biederman reportedly was threatening suicide. Police said Biederman fired at the officers when they arrived, and a gunfight ensued.

Biederman and one deputy, 27-year-old Kellen Hudson, were shot.

Triplett said Hudson received a minor gunshot wound to the hip and was treated and "released pretty quickly." Hudson will be on paid administrative leave, as is customary, until an investigation into the officer-involved shooting is completed.

Following medical treatment for the grazing bullet wound to his head, Biederman was booked into the Iron County Jail. Triplett said Biederman "developed a brain bleed" Saturday and was taken by helicopter to a hospital in northern Utah.
