CLINTON — A 4-year-old girl was killed in a car crash near an elementary school Wednesday.

Around 2 p.m., a westbound red Pontiac pulled into the eastbound lane on 1800 North. The sedan collided with an eastbound Dodge Durango in front of Clinton Elementary School (1100 West and 1800 North), according to police.

The Pontiac, driven by an adult male, carried two children. One child in the vehicle was killed in the collision, Clinton police said.

"It's a very tragic event. I hate to see accidents period," Chilson said.

A second child was injured, sent to the hospital in "critical to fair condition," Clinton police chief Bill Chilson said.

The female driver of the Durango and the male driver of the sedan were in critical condition following the crash, Chilson said.

One injured patient was taken via medical helicopter to an area hospital. Two patients were transported by ground for treatment.

Police were unsure whether or not seatbelts were used, Chilson said.

Chilson said little is known about why the Pontiac was on the wrong side of the road at this point.

"There's no skid marks, nothing to tell you much of anything to be honest with you, other than it was a direct, head-on collision," he said.

The road was closed while police investigated the crash.

Children were in class at the time of the crash. The school does not release them from class until 3:15, Chilson said. Police notified the school and parents of the closure, rerouting traffic to the east side.
