SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's top-performing Title I schools were recognized Wednesday by the State Office of Education for their efforts at mitigating the challenges of high-poverty populations.

A total of 51 elementary and secondary schools across the state were selected for recognition by the state office. The schools represent the top 15 percent of Utah's Title I schools, a designation given to schools in high-poverty areas that also receive additional federal funding.

Ann White, Title I coordinator for the State Office of Education, said Utah's lowest-performing schools often receive attention, but it's nice to recognize the good work happening at the state's most challenged schools.

"Many of them are outperforming schools that are not as high in those poverty levels," she said. "They are schools that are doing very well in meeting their goals and increasing student achievement."
