East, Manti move up to No. 1

SALT LAKE CITY — An impressive start to the season has placed the East Leopards atop this week's 4A KSL Coaches Poll.

After crushing Alta in week 1, they hosted Kahuku, Hawaii on Saturday and did the same to the Red Raiders, jumping out to a 28-2 lead in the first half of a 38-15 win.

Logan moves up to No. 2 on the strength of another road win over a 5A school. The Grizzlies dominated Cottonwood 24-7 to move to 2-0 on the season.

Timpview drops to No. 3 after falling to Pleasant Grove at home 21-19. They are followed in the 4A poll by Highland and Timpanogos, who is off to a 2-0 start as they prepare to face Pleasant Grove this week.

Bingham is still No. 1 in the 5A Poll, followed by Syracuse, Pleasant Grove, Alta and Jordan.

Top 5 performances:

Braxton Coonis, Uintah

The Utes quarterback led his team to a 42-7 victory on the road against Green River, Wyoming. He passed for 370 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for 166 yards and a score.

Mack Richards, Alta

The Hawks leading receiver is off to a great start this season. He caught 14 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns in Alta's 35-17 win over Lone Peak.

Jared Schiess, Manti

Schiess had a night to remember on both sides of the ball in the Templars 42-17 win over Provo. He rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass on offense while racking up 7.5 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one interception on defense.

Jackson Dunford, Timpanogos

Dunford was 22-36 for 365 yards and five touchdowns in the Timberwolves 34-16 win over Spanish Fork.

Spencer Wihongi, Stansbury

Wihongi set a school record for tackles with 19 and also added a sack in Stansbury's big win over Hurricane.

Pleasant Grove made the big jump from unranked to No. 3, thanks to their victory at Timpview on Friday. Alta is back in the top five after an impressive win over previously ranked Lone Peak 35-17.

The other big change in this week's poll is in 3A where Manti is now the No. 1 ranked team. The Templars dominated 4A against Provo on Friday, winning 42-17. It's the second 4A opponent Manti has defeated by double digits this season.

Grantsville moves up to No. 2, setting up a No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup this Friday between the Templars and Cowboys.

Morgan drops to No. 3 followed by Juab and Judge.

Desert Hills remains No. 1 in 3AA followed by Juan Diego, Pine View, Stansbury and Dixie.

South Summit remains No. 1 in 2A after a thrilling win over Morgan. They are followed by Grand, Beaver, San Juan and American Leadership Academy.

Duchesne won at North Summit for their 36th consecutive win, which ties Timpview's state record. They can break the record Friday with a win at Carbon.

The Eagles are No. 1 in 1A, followed by Rich, Kanab, Monticello and Diamond Ranch.
