SALT LAKE CITY— Cottonwood Heights police caught two women they said were using fake checks and stolen credit cards to steal from stores in the Salt Lake Valley Friday.
Investigators said the pair found police waiting for them at the Cottonwood Heights Target after hitting the Target stores in West Jordan and Sandy.
"What they do is they bring in the traveler's checks, they buy a small dollar amount worth of product and then they'll get the cash back," said Sgt. Dan Bartlett of the Cottonwood Heights Police Department.
Zykhiad Williams, 22, and Linda Lewis, 23, would travel from Northern California, collect money from the stores in Utah and then bring it back with them to the Bay Area, police said.
They would frequent Target, Walmart and other stores, purchasing small dollar items or gift cards, Bartlett said. Police said there was video surveillance of them at all of the stores, which they will soon receive.
Target's loss prevention team had notified their stores, and when the two women came to the Cottonwood Heights store they informed the police. The two women had come through and done the same thing last week, but hadn't been identified, Bartlett said.
Police said the two women had numerous fraudulent checks on them, as well as stolen credit cards, insurance cards and fake IDs. They'll could face multiple felony charges.
