SANDY — A man already on the Utah Sex Offender Registry was arrested over the weekend after police say he may have drugged a woman before raping her.

A sexual assault nurse at Alta View Hospital called the woman's injuries "the most severe she has seen," according to police.

Michael Anthony Kooyman, 39, was arrested for investigation of two counts aggravated sexual assault and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.

On Sunday, Kooyman and a woman, who have common friends, went swimming together and then to several bars. After drinking alcohol at one bar, the woman said she "immediately felt groggy and 'out of it,'" a Salt Lake County Jail report states.

She later told police she believed she was drugged. "She immediately felt the effects of the drink, and reported the feeling to be different from the effects of alcohol," the report states.

Criminal history
  • In 2002, Kooyman was convicted of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony, and placed on the Utah Sex Offender Registry.

  • In 2010 he was charged with failing to register as a sex offender, a third-degree felony, that was ultimately dismissed.

  • On Dec. 31, 2012, he was again charged with failing to register as a sex offender. A preliminary hearing for that case is scheduled for June 26.

The woman requested to be taken home, but Kooyman took her to his residence instead at 2295 E. Alta Canyon Dr. At the house, Kooyman displayed a handgun and "made a statement to the effect, anyone who messes with his family ends up in a ditch," the report states.

The woman went into a bedroom and fell asleep. She awoke to find Kooyman assaulting her, according to police. Detectives say after the rape, Kooyman fell asleep and the woman left the house and called a friend.

When investigators later served a search warrant on Kooyman's house, they said they found a handgun and a clear liquid in the refrigerator believed to be GHB, also sometimes referred to as a "date rape drug."
