SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah competed its first spring scrimmage of 2013 Friday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium under picture perfect weather conditions.

While the rain cleared out just in time for the 100-play scrimmage, the offense and defense each took their shots at proving which side of the ball is better thus far through three weeks of spring camp.

Utah's top three quarterbacks, returning starter Travis Wilson, sophomore Adam Schulz and true freshman Brandon Cox combined for 387 passing yards.

Wilson struggled out of the gate, throwing two early interceptions and looked uneasy in the pocket. But eventually he found his grove, finishing 11-25 for 146 yards and a TD. He also threw a 25-yard TD pass to Dres Anderson, but it got called back for holding.

James Poole led the running backs with 12 carries for 68 yards and three touchdowns, refusing to go down on first contact, twisting and fighting for extra yards every opportunity.

Another running back in the mix is Lucky Radley, who finished with 10 carries for 47 yards and 1 TD, while adding four catches for 41 yards and another TD.

Receiver Dres Anderson had an absolutely terrific day, catching pass after pass, creating separation with his pure foot speed. Anderson finished with six catches for 103 yards and a TD.

"A lot of positives in the scrimmage", said ninth-year head coach Kyle Whittingham. "Still some work to do, as there always is, but we did a lot better job offensively of not shooting ourselves in the foot. We finished drives and had very few self-inflicted wounds. It was a clean scrimmage with very few penalties. The defense was a little soft at times, but probably half of our starting defense isn't out there right now; so I'm not concerned about it. We did make some plays in the secondary by our veterans. The tempo of the offense was good."

Utah will have another scrimmage next Saturday. The Red and White game is scheduled for April 20th at 1 pm.
