SPANISH FORK, Utah (AP) -- It's a sign of growth no one's happy to see: a new wing at the local county jail.
Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy says the expansion project will give the county up to 1,300 available jail beds. He says he hopes that will be breathing room for a couple of years.
The project expanded the jail's kitchen, laundry and medical facilities, while adding new lodging and a high-security unit for the most dangerous prisoners.
The project had a $20 million price tag, but last minutes changes to fix omissions in project plans are driving up the final costs.
Tracy says the expansion is running between 7 and 15 percent over original costs.
The current jail houses just 400 prisoners.
