PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Three inmates from the Utah County Jail were charged with trying to escape from court after attempting to unlock their handcuffs with a paper clip.
Court documents say Ramon Alcala-Ibanez, 35, of Provo, 21-year-old Robert Eager of Lehi and 19-year-old Charles Wheeler of Provo were each charged with attempted escape, a third-degree felony, and possession of an escape device, a second-degree felony.
According to the court documents, the three men were in a holding cell in the Provo district court building when Eager started trying to unlock his cuffs with a concealed paper clip. He then passed the paper clips to the others so they could try to free themselves.
However, a Utah County sheriff's deputy was watching the three men on surveillance camera and caught them.
