Lion House bakers work overtime in anticipation of Thanksgiving

SALT LAKE CITY — The Lion House Pantry: in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, this is the place. Dozens of bakers work around the clock to meet the demands of orders that come from throughout the western United States.

For this week, the Pantry will fill Thanksgiving dinner tables with 10,875 rolls.

"In fact, our CEO, Brent Shingleton, took a load down to Cedar City a few days ago. They had run out, so they called (and said), ‘Can we get some more rolls?'" said executive chef David Bench.


"So, they jumped into a van and drove a whole van load down to Cedar City," he said.

The signature rolls are rolled into their classic shape and baked in giant ovens. After 24 minutes at 350 degrees: mouthwatering success.

But let's not forget the pies. The Lion House Pantry fills orders for thousands of them each year, pumpkin chief among them now. It takes three bakers three hours to box 300 of pies. But they're worth it.

If you missed out on making your Thanksgiving order this year, don't worry. The pies and rolls will be available at the Lion House restaurant and all Deseret Book stores throughout the holiday season.
