(KSL News) Salt Lake City's police and fire departments are offering free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms to city residents.

A grant makes the program possible. Authorities say carbon monoxide poisoning kills hundreds of Americans each year and sends thousands more to the hospital. The ordorless gas can come from furnaces, fireplaces and cars.

Salt Lake residents who want an alarm can get them at community council meetings.
