LONDON -- I'm trying to be like one of those guards there quiet and very, very still. It's not the easiest thing to do for hours on end — especially when it's hot outside. I asked tourists if they think they can do it.
"If I had to wear that hat, and now it's very hot, impossible," said Padriga Perez.
Perez is from Barcelona and she's used to it being hot outside, but you don't see people wearing this in her hometown. She won't even try it.
"I couldn't, okay? I couldn't." Perez said.
So, we asked folks lined up outside the Buckingham Palace gates if they could wear those hats outside in the heat while standing still.
"Especially in a hat like that, I'd be sweaty as a beast! I swear," said Grace Verity.
Verity is from England so she knows the history of the guards. When two are in front of the palace, it means the Queen is not there. Four guards means she is there.
Buckingham Palace itself is the official administrative work place of the British Monarchy. With some 800 rooms, it's a a pretty big facility. But it's those guards that always seem to get the most attention. Yeah, they move every now and then slightly but for the most part they stay still. Verity would like to know how they do it.
"I'd probably ask them what they even think about because I would be just bored as hell," Verity said. "I'd probably put some music on or something. I would not be able to just look. I don't know."
The changing of the guard that is, when a brand new regiment takes over happens every day from April to July.
It's just one of those traditions that is pretty neat to see, and easy to at least try and do.Just stand up and stand still.
