EPHRAIM — Snow College's first four-year program was approved by the Board of Regents Friday.
After several years of preparing the proposal and program, Snow College will now offer a Bachelor's Degree of Commercial Music with focuses in music performance, music production and songwriting/composition.
Classes are expected to begin this coming August, with students enrolling as juniors, and they are expected to graduate in May 2014.
"This is an exciting time for us," said Dr. Vance Larsen, Dean of the Fine Arts Division. "We have worked very hard to provide a proposal that we believe will meet the needs of the students."
The Music Department has worked closely for the last eight years with Dr. Laurie Carter of the Julliard School in New York, who serves on the 15-member advisory board for the music program. The collaboration with the prestigious school has created a program that marries music and entrepreneurship, which Carter calls "cutting-edge."
Since the program was approved for the fall, recruitment for the first year is a challenge for the Music Department. Dr. Steve Meredith, chair of the Music Department, believes that a large number of students will still enroll.
"I am very excited for the program," said Carlie Hansen, a vocal performance student from Cedar Hills and a current Snow College student. "My plan was to transfer, but now I can stay here. I love Snow so it is perfect for me."
