ST. GEORGE, Utah — Race organizers say they will make the 2013 Ironman triathlon in St. George easier to attract more athletes.
The Spectrum of St. George reports (http://bit.ly/I82K4h ) that organizers hope to nearly double the number of participants to 3,000 by cutting the triathlon course in half.
The World Triathlon Corp. has sponsored a St. George triathlon since 2010, and the next one is set for May 5.
The full-length Ironman race gives people 17 hours to complete.
Officials say it's just too much for most people - a 2.4-mile swim at Sand Hollow Reservoir in Hurricane, a 112-mile bicycle course mostly northwest of Ivins plus a 26.2-mile marathon run starting and finishing in St. George.
Next year's shorter Ironman will consist of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13-mile run. (Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.)
