Marc Giauque, KSL NewsradioHealth officials today are meeting to talk about yet another sharp increase in the number of cryptosporidium cases.
It's happening in spite of preventative measures at local swimming pools.
A few weeks ago, the chlorine-resistant bug was believed to have sickened at least 400 Utahns; now the health department says that number is more like 1,200.
But disease investigator Rich Lakin says part of that increase may in part be due to publicity. He says, "Since we did raise the awareness, there could be a definite increase in the number of reportings to the state health department."
Lakin says there's also a two-week incubation period, meaning it may be too early to tell if pool restrictions have had an impact.
If they decide they have been ineffective, Lakin says health officials might recommend outright pool closures.
