SALT LAKE CITY -- A preliminary report suggests the overall crime rate in Utah decreased from 2009 to 2010.

The Bureau of Criminal Identification's Annual Report of Crime Statistics in Utah shows both violent crime and property crime has been dropping around the U.S., and Utah, overall, has seen a similar trend.

Preliminary data summary 2010
  • Index crimes reported: 92,335, a 4.58% decrease from 2009.
  • Violent crime decreased 3.09%
  • Homicides increased 17.07%
  • Robbery decreased 3.88%
  • Rape decreased 3.68%
  • Aggravated assault decreased 2.88%
  • Property crime decreased 4.67%
  • Larceny decreased 3.95%
  • Motor vehicle theft decreased 14.48%
  • Arson decreased 17.26%
  • Burglary decreased 3.62%

The dollar value of property stolen in Utah during 2010 was more than $83 million, but that's down by 7.75 percent from 2009. Recovery of that stolen property decreased by 12 percent. Cases of reported property theft were down about 4.5 percent.

Violent crime dropped by about 3 percent.

In all, the number of people being arrested in Utah was down more than 7 percent.

The report notes that the statistics are only as accurate as the data provided by law enforcement agencies. Sixteen out of 142 agencies did not submit data for the report. Get details by reporting agency here.
