SALT LAKE CITY -- Who will challenge Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, now that Congressman Jason Chaffetz has decided he won't run for Senate?

Dave Hansen, Hatch's campaign manager, told the Daily Herald he expects other Republicans will step up to challenge the six-term senator.

Utah's Tea Party is looking for someone to run against Hatch. Tea Party leader David Kirkham says the group wants someone more consistent than Hatch in being fiscally conservative, and perhaps Kirkham himself will run.

Other potential candidates include:

  • State Sen. Dan Liljenquist, R-Bountiful
  • Morgan Philpot, who ran against Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, in the last election and plans to run for the House again
  • State Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, who was planning to run for Chaffetz's seat until he learned Chaffetz is running for reelection to the House

Utah's deadline to file to run for office is March 15, 2012.
