(KSL News) Draper residents are angry they have to foot the bill for their city's growth with a major property tax increase.
The city council approved a 70 percent tax increase on the city's portion of the property tax bill. That means homeowners with a $500,000 home will pay about $170 more a year in taxes.
The city says the money will fund public services like road repairs. Residents believe the hike is too much, though it's the first tax increase in Draper in nearly 20 years.
While Draper residents are angry about their property tax increase, Syracuse residents are applauding theirs.
The city council approved a 48 percent property tax increase to raise $392,000. To compensate, the council decreased water rates.
The crowd applauded at the public hearing following the announcement. The money will pay for more city employees like firefighters and police officers.
