SALT LAKE CITY — Mayor Ralph Becker will square off against only one official opponent this fall in his quest to keep his seat at the head of the city for a second term.
As of the filing deadline Friday, only John Allen Kimball, a 79-year-old Avenues resident, had submitted his formal intent to run for mayor of Utah's capital city.
The Salt Lake County Republican Party recently listed Kimball as a precinct chairman for its central committee. In May, Kimball submitted a letter to lawmakers outlining his thoughts on redistricting. It included a mathematical formula by which to generate the number of senate seats "appropriate for the expeditious conduct of its business," Kimball wrote.
Becker, who announced his intent to run for a second term in January, won a close race for the hotly contested mayoral post in 2007. Earlier this year, Becker said he expected the impending election to be competitive as well.
While mayor is a nonpartisan position in Salt Lake, voters have not elected a Republican since Jake Garn, in 1972.
