OGDEN — The FBI is now investigating a discovery at Ogden's James V. Hansen Federal Building that caused a scare, and the evacuation of more than 200 employees.

Deputy Ogden Fire Chief Chad Tucker said it all started with a worker opening mail on the building's sixth floor around 12:30 Thursday afternoon.

"The envelope did not appear suspicious," Tucker said. "When they went ahead and opened the envelope, they found a suspicious substance inside that. Then they activated the system."

The building was initially placed on lockdown, then people were told to evacuate. More than 200 people were sent home for the day.

Among the people in the building were children of some workers who were taking part in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

A hazardous materials team from Weber County isolated the envelope and determined the material inside posed no radioactive threat. But Tucker said there was not enough of the material for them to field test for additional hazards.

The FBI said the material will be tested in a lab for any biological threat.

As a precaution, four people who were close to the material were decontaminated by hazmat crews before they were allowed to go home.

The FBI said the people who were near the substance did not experience any symptoms.
