SALT LAKE CITY — Nine confirmed cases of measles have been detected and contained to Salt Lake County, health officials confirmed Tuesday.
The outbreak has not spread beyond four Granite School District schools, said Salt Lake Valley Health Department spokesman Nicholas Rupp. The affected schools include Olympus and Skyline high schools, Evergreen Junior High and William Penn Elementary. The school district is on spring break.
"We are relieved there are no additional schools involved," Rupp said.
A case confirmed late last week involved a student who had received immunizations; however, department officials would not comment on the immunization status of the latest three cases, citing federal privacy laws.
The outbreak likely originated with a Utah family who recently vacationed in Poland to pick up their missionary daughter.
According to the Salt Lake Valley Health Department, 98 percent of school-age children in Salt Lake County are properly vaccinated for measles.
"We don't really think there will be a problem with that one either," spokesman Bob Ballew said of the remaining case.
